Terms of Use

These Terms of Use govern your use of the Voltmoss mobile app and its home-screen widgets (the "App"). Please read them — the App can send commands to a real car.

1. Acceptance

By installing or using the App you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the App. If you downloaded the App from the Apple App Store, Apple's standard End User Licence Agreement also applies; where it conflicts with these Terms, Apple's terms prevail for App Store users.

2. What Voltmoss is

Voltmoss is a client for a j5-ev-dashboard telemetry server that you host yourself. The App has no account system and no backend of its own: it displays what your server reports about your car and relays the commands you send to it. Voltmoss is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any car manufacturer or their connected-car services, and those names are the property of their respective owners.

3. Your server and your credentials

You are responsible for the server you connect the App to: for running it, securing it, and complying with the terms of any service (including CarLinko) that the server itself signs in to. Signing in to CarLinko through your server may end a session in the official CarLinko app, because that account allows one session at a time. Keep your dashboard password confidential; if you choose to remember it on the device, anyone who can unlock your phone can open the App.

4. Remote vehicle commands — read this

The App can send remote commands to your car — lock, unlock, air conditioning, find-my-car, stop charging, and, where the car reports them, windows, sunroof and tailgate. These are relayed through your own server using vehicle operation codes that are best effort: apart from "stop charging", none is verified by the vehicle manufacturer, and the "Opcode lab" lets you send arbitrary codes and remap buttons.

You use remote commands entirely at your own risk. You must confirm that it is safe before sending a command that moves glass, opens a hatch, unlocks the car or changes charging: check that nobody is in the way, that the vehicle is where you think it is, and that local law allows the action. Do not operate the App while driving. We accept no responsibility for any damage, injury, loss, theft or fine arising from a command sent through the App, whether it did what you intended or not.

5. Figures are estimates

Range, efficiency, running cost, petrol savings, charge forecasts, trip plans and charging-station availability are derived from your server's data and from assumptions you can change in Settings. They are provided for information only and may be wrong. Plan journeys with a margin, and treat any station listing as a suggestion to verify on arrival.

6. Third-party services

The App loads map tiles from Carto, downloads typefaces from Google Fonts, can hand routes to Google Maps, and sends anonymous usage analytics and crash reports to Google Firebase (which you can switch off). Your use of those services is governed by their own terms. How each one handles your data is described in our Privacy Policy.

7. Acceptable use

Use the App only with vehicles and servers you own or are authorised to control. Do not use it to access another person's vehicle or server, to interfere with a vehicle's safety systems, or in any way that breaks the law. Do not attempt to circumvent the confirmation dialogs or the safeguards around risky commands.

8. Intellectual property and open source

The App, its design and its name are owned by the developer. The App's source code is published at github.com/anderscheow/j5_ev_app; use of the source is governed by the licence stated in that repository, and the App includes open-source components under their own licences.

9. Disclaimer of warranties

The App is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the App will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with your vehicle, server build or device.

10. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, vehicle damage, theft, injury, fines or lost time, arising from your use of or inability to use the App. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the App, which is nothing.

11. Termination

You may stop using the App at any time by deleting it. We may discontinue the App or any feature at any time. Sections 4, 5, 9 and 10 survive termination.

12. Changes

We may update these Terms. The effective date above will change and material changes will be mentioned in the App's release notes. Continuing to use the App after a change means you accept the new Terms.

13. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Malaysia, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and any dispute will be brought in the courts of Malaysia — unless the consumer-protection law of the country you live in gives you rights that cannot be excluded, in which case those rights are unaffected.
